
Adult Education UpdateDuring February and March, Adult Forum will present the PBS video series, "This Far By Faith: African-American Spiritual Journeys." The series, developed by noted journalist Juan Williams, surveys the history of the African American religious experience from slavery to the modern era. The dates and topics are: Feb. 6: There is a River - An introduction to the series, focusing on the evolution of religious thought among African Americans during slavery and the way Christianity and African beliefs and rites combined to form a unique form of faith expression. Feb. 13: God is a Negro - A history of the post-Emancipation period, when African American Christianity confronted the discrimination and brutality of Reconstruction and the early Jim Crow period. Feb. 20: Guide My Feet - A look at the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to the urban industrial North and the transforming effect it had on spirituality. Feb. 27: Freedom Faith - An examination of the way African American churches challenged segregation and racism from the early to mid-twentieth century. Mar. 6: Inheritors of the Faith - An exploration of African American spiritual traditions outside of Christianity, specifically Islam and Yoruba. Mar. 13: Rise Up and Call Their Names - The concluding episode of the series follows sixty people who, in 1998, retraced the Middle Passage (the route of the slave trade) from the Americas to Africa and shared their reflections on the spiritual impact of their voyage. Each tape in the series runs approximately sixty minutes and will begin promptly at 9:15 am. Adult Forum meets in the library and everyone is encouraged to attend. |
